Meta Tags:

Data placed in the code of a web page that helps search engines decipher what the web page is about.

Meta Description Tag:

The meta tag that contains the description of the web page.

Meta Keywords Tag:

The meta tag that contains the keywords of the web page.

Organic Listings:

Listings that search engines do not require payment for. Websites appear based on the importance and relevance of the search query; also referred to as natural search results.

Organic Search Engine Optimization:

The method of developing and marketing a website so that it achieves higher ranking in the search engine results pages. Also referred to as Organic SEO.

Outbound Links:

Links on a web page which lead the visitor to another web page, within the same web site or to another external web site.

Paid Inclusion:

An advertising program in which web owners can pay for their websites to be included in a search engine’s index.

PPC:

An acronym for pay-per-click

Paid Placement:

Search engine listings available on search engines by payment only. They are guaranteed to be listed for the search query chosen by the advertiser. Higher ranking can be achieved by paying more than other advertisers. Keywords are purchased through an auction, on a cost-per-click basis.

Query:

The particular words or phrase a searcher types into a search engine form. Also referred to as search term.

Rank/ranking:

The position of a website in the search results of a search engine.

Reciprocal Link:

When a website contains a link to another website in exchange for a backlink from the other website.

Results Pages:

The listings of websites that are displayed after a searcher enters a particular query. Also referred to as SERPs, an acronym for "search engine results page."

Robots.txt:

A simple text file of instruction code that alerts the search engine robots what to do with the information found on your website.

ROI:

An acronym for “Return on Investment,” representing the amount of profit produced from a particular project. It is calculated by subtracting the total amount of expenditures for the given project from the gross profit made, and then divided by the expenditures. In reference to search engines, spam includes any marketing method that has a negative impact on natural search results. Spamming methods include keyword stuffing, invisible text and doorway pages. Also referred to as Black Hat SEO.

Submission:

To enter a website URL for inclusion into a search engine's or directory's index. Acceptance is up to the search engine or directory.
