Algorithm: An advanced formula with a set of rules used by search engines to evaluate a website in determining its relevancy to a particular search. The search engines then rank the websites within its index accordingly in their search results for a given query. Search engines keep the exact details of how algorithms work from the public.

Alt tag:

An attribute included within an element link, most often an image link, to describe what the graphic is about, used to aid the vision impaired and search engine robots that cannot see images.

Anchor Text:

The text that contains a link embedded to another page of a website or the internet.

Backlinks:

All incoming links to a web page from an external website. Also referred to as inbound links.

Banned Web pages:

Web pages that are extracted from a search engine’s index and listings because of violating submission guidelines or performing spam.

Crawler-based Search Engines:

Search engines which utilize a system of robots, or “crawlers,” to scan entire web pages for information, and follow links on websites to other websites, in order to register the information in their index. Most major search engines are crawler-based, including: Google, Yahoo, MSN, and many others.

Domain:

The online address of your website, which is in the format: www.yourwebsite.com. It will direct the visitor to your website when typed into any browser.

Doorway Pages:

HTML pages that are optimized with a large amount of keywords and are designed to be an entrance into the “real website.” This is an example of black hat SEO.

Ezine:

An electronic version of a magazine or journal.

Flash:

A program used to create animation or movies.

Google Page Rank:

A method Google uses to assign a number between zero and ten, to every website on the internet, also known as PR or Google PR.

HTML:

An acronym for HyperText Markup Language, it is essentially the coding language used to create web pages.

Index:

The information a search engine contains, through which the search results are produced. It is basically made up of copies of web pages they have found from “crawling” the web

Keyword:

A word or phrase a web owner optimizes his/her website for, in an effort to be highly listed in the search engines for the query on the keyword.

Keyword Analysis:

The method of researching the proper keywords a web owner desires their website to rank highly for.

Keyword Density:

A ratio of the amount of times a keyword is used in relation to the total word count of the web page. It is calculated by dividing the times the keyword is mentioned by the total number of words on the page.

Link Bait:

Online content that attracts other website owners to link to it because of its unique value.

Link Popularity:

The measurement of how "popular" a page is based on the number of backlinks it has.

Link Text:

The text that is contained within a link and is visible to the reader. For example, web hosting is a link that contains the link text "web hosting.”

List Building:

The system of building link popularity.
